"El Rana" leaves Valdivia and arrives at Santiago prison due to health reasons

Carlos Cancino, known as "El Rana" and accused of the murder of senior non-commissioned officer Eugenio Naín, was transferred on Tuesday morning to the Penitentiary Hospital of Santiago 1 prison in the Metropolitan Region, according to information reported by biobiochile.cl.

The transfer was carried out under the custody of the Gendarmerie and Carabineros police from Valdivia prison. Cancino had remained admitted to Valdivia Hospital since Wednesday of the previous week, after being shot during the operation on the coast of the Los Ríos Region in which he was captured.

The regional public defender for Los Ríos, Luis Soto, explained that Santiago's Penitentiary Hospital offers better conditions to treat the health instability that the accused is experiencing. Soto added that they have so far been unable to establish contact with Cancino, who on Saturday was still on tracheal intubation. The meeting that the defence attempted to arrange on Tuesday at Valdivia prison was not possible, as the accused was already being prepared for the transfer.

Cancino remained a fugitive for five years following his accusation as the material author of the murder of senior non-commissioned officer Naín. Following his recent formalisation on that charge, the court decreed preventive detention as a precautionary measure.

In addition to the Naín killing, the accused will be formalised on Friday 24 July for the homicide of police officer Marco Cosme, whom he fatally shot during the same operation in which he was detained. The hearing will take place via videoconference, and the Public Criminal Defence Service will represent him before the courts.
