Haase was part of the group of military personnel accused of Jara's death and had fled authorities after learning of his conviction, remaining a fugitive until his capture.
Jara was a pacifist activist who supported socialist president Salvador Allende. In September 1973, just five days after the coup d'état that toppled Allende and brought General Augusto Pinochet to power, Jara was tortured and executed with 44 shots.
