A court in the Los Lagos region declared an individual guilty of the deaths of two direct family members that occurred in March 2024 on Caguach Island, territory that forms part of the municipality of Quinchao. The victims were his mother, aged 75, and his brother, aged 34.
Following an extensive trial phase, the judge determined that there was sufficient evidence to establish the defendant's responsibility in both crimes. The first was classified as parricide, a charge that applies when the perpetrator is a direct family member of the victim, and the second as simple homicide.
The public prosecutor representing the state in the accusation, Javier Calisto, requested the most severe penalty for the parricide charge, which corresponds to life imprisonment, together with a sentence of two decades of incarceration for the second offence. The court will set the definitive sentences in the sentencing phase.
The double crime was confirmed by health workers who were on duty at the healthcare facility on the island. At the time of the events, the defendant already had a criminal record that included charges for lesser assaults, intimidation in the domestic sphere and offences against law enforcement officers.
