A 35-year-old driver was shot dead on route 160 in Coronel while travelling with his family. The victim had a criminal record, had been acquitted of a double homicide, and was breaching a home confinement order.

On Friday afternoon, a 35-year-old man lost his life after being struck by bullets whilst driving on the bypass of route 160 in the Coronel municipality, Bío Bío region. Inside the vehicle were also his cohabiting partner and a child.
The armed attack occurred as the vehicle was travelling from south to north, near the Llacolén footbridge and the Embotelladora area. From another car travelling on the road, someone opened fire on the driver, who died instantly. The exact number of bullets has yet to be established by forensic experts.
The deceased was identified as Moisés Loyola Rifo. His criminal history includes previous arrests for burglary in homes and open areas, possession of bladed and firearms, as well as assault of varying degrees of severity. In 2016, he was tried for qualified double homicide committed in the O'Higgins neighbourhood of Coronel, but was ultimately acquitted. At the time of the attack, he was breaching a preventive measure of home confinement imposed in a case involving illegal weapons possession.
The Homicide Brigade of Concepción and the PDI's Criminal Laboratory took over the investigation. Subprefect Miguel Ángel Carrillo, second in command of the brigade, stated that an active search was underway for those responsible for the shooting. The chief prosecutor of Coronel, Hugo Cuevas, also disclosed the initial steps of the inquiry.
This crime brings the total number of homicides in the municipality this year to six, and to 35 across the entire region.
