Carlos "El Rana" Cancino arrested transferred to Santiago under heavy guard
The man accused of the murder of two carabineros was transferred from Valdivia to the Metropolitan Region with an escort provided by the Prison Service and Carabineros.

Carlos Esteban Cancino Tapia, alias "El Rana", was transferred on Tuesday 21 July from Llancahue prison in Valdivia to the Metropolitan Region in a joint operation by the Prison Service and Carabineros, according to diariolagoranco.cl.
The convoy of police vehicles departed at 10:45 hours from the prison facilities. Both institutions deployed a special contingent to guard the suspect's departure and secure the route to Santiago.
On Monday 20 July, the Garantía Court in Temuco ordered remand in custody for Cancino. Judge Caroline Guzmán granted the request by the Public Prosecutor's Office, based on the high danger posed by the accused. The hearing took place by video link, as Cancino was wounded during the capture operation carried out the previous week in Valdivia.
The accused was formally charged as the perpetrator of the crimes of murder of a carabinero on duty and unjustified shooting, as well as the attempted crimes of murder of a carabinero on duty and simple homicide.
Cancino, aged 28, was arrested by the GOPE special forces unit of Carabineros in the Punucapa sector of Valdivia. He is identified as one of those responsible for the death of Corporal Eugenio Nain, which occurred in October 2020 in Metrenco, a municipality of Padre Las Casas.
Cornered by the officers, Cancino opened fire and wounded non-commissioned officer Roberto Canío and first corporal Marco Cosme. Cosme, who suffered more serious injuries after being shot in the face, died this weekend after several days admitted to the intensive care unit of Valdivia Hospital.
The investigation against Cancino has a period of 45 days for its development.
