On Tuesday, authorities detained three people linked to the carjacking that caused the death of a 12-year-old boy in the municipality of San Bernardo. Among those arrested is a 17-year-old adolescent and two adults, all Chilean nationals.
The operation was made possible through the cross-referencing of information from toll booths that the suspects crossed while fleeing, combined with analysis of video surveillance footage and nine raids carried out by the OS-9 (police investigation unit).
The incident occurred around 01:15 in the early hours of the morning, when a group of approximately seven young people assaulted a man who was carrying petrol in his white Mitsubishi ASX. Several of them then used the same SUV to intercept a family travelling in a red Peugeot 2008. After threatening the parents, they took control of the vehicle.
During the robbery, the 12-year-old boy became caught and was dragged for several kilometres, dying as a result of his injuries.
The mayor of the municipality, Christopher White, requested military intervention to regain territorial control from criminal organisations such as the Los Macaya clan, whose properties were recently raided. For his part, the Security Minister, Martín Arrau, acknowledged that the State failed in its protective role.
