DIRECTEMAR brings together institutions at seminar on maritime drug trafficking in Viña del Mar
DIPOLMAR held its second seminar on drug trafficking in the maritime logistics chain on 25 and 26 May at the Naval War Academy.
Seminar analyses new routes of drug trafficking in ports and maritime terminals
The General Directorate of Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine (DIRECTEMAR) convened representatives of institutions linked to port security, criminal prosecution and drug control on 25 and 26 May for its second seminar on illicit trafficking in the maritime logistics chain, according to information from directemar.cl.
The activity, organised by the Department of Police Intelligence and Maritime Investigations (DIPOLMAR), took place at the Naval War Academy in Viña del Mar. Attending were the Undersecretary of Public Security, Andrés Jouannet, as well as authorities from the Public Ministry, the Chilean Carabineros, the Police Investigations Service, the National Customs Service and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The General Director of DIRECTEMAR, Vice Admiral Arturo Oxley, underscored the regional dimension of the problem. "Today we are brought together by a reality that affects not only Chile, but also the entire region: the evolution of transnational organised crime and its growing impact on the maritime and port logistics chain," he stated.
Oxley further emphasised the need to coordinate efforts among agencies. "It is fundamental to strengthen investigative capacities, criminal analysis, police intelligence and, especially, coordinated work between institutions," he indicated.
The presentations covered issues such as contamination of containerised cargo, maritime drug trafficking routes, port and customs controls, and the challenges posed by the North Bioceanic Corridor to logistics security. Modalities employed by criminal organisations to infiltrate port systems were also analysed, along with experiences from prosecutor's offices specialising in investigations of international cargo.
The seminar is part of a line of work promoted by DIPOLMAR to create spaces for analysis and exchange of knowledge on drug trafficking, transnational organised crime and protection of the port logistics chain, with the aim of strengthening cooperation between national and international institutions.
