Man formalised for stabbing in defence of his father in Pozo Almonte
The Local Prosecutor's Office of Tamarugal succeeded in obtaining a court order for preventive detention of an individual formalised for attempted homicide. The incident took place at a residence in the municipality of Pozo Almonte, where the accused seriously wounded a man who moments earlier had beaten his 57-year-old father.
According to the prosecutor in charge, Milton Torres, in the early morning of 7 July 2026, shortly before three o'clock, three people were together at a house in the locality: the now accused, his father, and a third party with whom both were acquainted. The gathering, at which alcoholic beverages were consumed, descended into an argument that triggered a beating of the father by the guest. In response, the son took a blade weapon and attacked the assailant, leaving him with wounds to the neck, shoulder, back and chest.
Despite the seriousness of his condition, the injured person left the premises. His movements were recorded by the municipal video surveillance system as he moved with difficulty through the streets. Municipal inspectors, alerted by the monitoring centre, arrived at the scene and took him to the Primary Emergency Care Service in Pozo Almonte. The doctors detected conditions that threatened his life, including the accumulation of blood and air in the thoracic cavity, which is why he was transferred to the Regional Hospital of Iquique.
At the judicial hearing, the prosecutor presented medical reports stating that the injuries could have been fatal had medical assistance not been provided promptly. Testimonies from witnesses to the facts and the statement of the accused himself, who acknowledged having committed the assault, were also presented.
The Public Ministry requested the deprivation of liberty of the accused, arguing that his remaining in the community would represent a threat to it. The judge granted the request and set a period of one hundred days to complete the investigation.
