A review by the Comptroller General of the Republic (CGR) uncovered serious problems in the system for handling seized substances at Iquique airport. The report notes that more than twelve kilograms of cocaine paste were found without surveillance by law enforcement. Additionally, a body scanning device presented technical defects.
The evaluation was conducted in October of last year at the terminal in one of the cities with the highest incidence of drug trafficking-related crimes. The auditors also verified that several employees were using shared passwords to access the security camera system.
Another critical point was the shortage of staff in the anti-drug section of Customs. There was also no continuous police guard at the facilities. The review showed a lack of coordination between four institutions: the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics, Customs, the Investigation Police, and Carabineros.
Given these results, the oversight body required the implementation of corrective measures to strengthen protection of the facility.
