Defendant Carlos Cancino transferred to Santiago under police custody following double killing of carabineros
Carlos Cancino, alias "El Rana", was transferred from Valdivia to Santiago on Tuesday, 21 July with preventive detention decreed for the homicide of two carabineros.
High-security operation takes "El Rana" from Valdivia to the capital
According to diariodevaldivia.cl, a coordinated operation between the Gendarmería and Carabineros was executed on the morning of Tuesday, 21 July at the Llancahue prison facility in Valdivia. At 10:45 hours, a convoy of police vehicles departed bound for Santiago, transporting Carlos Esteban Cancino Tapia, known as "El Rana", 28 years old.
The Temuco Court of Guarantees decreed preventive detention for Cancino on Monday, 20 July. Magistrate Caroline Guzmán accepted the Public Prosecution Service's motion and formalised the defendant as the author of the completed offences of homicide of a carabinero in service and unjustified shooting, in addition to the attempted offences of homicide of a carabinero in service and simple homicide. Cancino appeared remotely before the judge, given that he was injured during the police operation that led to his capture the previous week.
The man is identified as one of those responsible for the death of Corporal Eugenio Nain, which occurred in October 2020 in the locality of Metrenco, municipality of Padre Las Casas. He was arrested by the GOPE of Carabineros in an operation carried out in the Punucapa sector, in Valdivia.
When surrounded by the officers, Cancino opened fire and wounded Sub-officer Roberto Canío and First Corporal Marco Cosme. The latter received a shot to the face and was admitted to the ICU at Valdivia Hospital, where he died this past weekend following several days of medical care. Cosme's death prompted the Public Prosecution Service to add charges of completed homicide to the formalisation.
The investigation against Cancino has a deadline of 45 days from his formalisation.
