Man held in preventive custody after knife attack in Pozo Almonte
The court ordered the provisional detention of an individual whom the Tamarugal Local Prosecutor's Office accused of attempting to murder another person during a domestic dispute in the municipality of Pozo Almonte. The conflict arose when a family friend assaulted the father of the accused, who responded by using a cutting weapon.
According to the chief prosecutor of the area, Milton Torres, the incident took place in the early hours of 7 July 2026, at around 02:50. The accused, his 57-year-old father and the person who was injured were having alcoholic drinks at a house in the locality. The conversation turned hostile and the visitor began to strike the older man. In response to the assault, the son took a kitchen knife and inflicted several stab wounds on him in different parts of his body, including the neck, back, shoulder and chest.
After receiving the wounds, the attacker managed to leave the property and walked along neighbouring streets in critical condition. The municipal video surveillance system captured his image, which allowed council inspectors to locate him, provide assistance and take him to the Rural Care Service of Pozo Almonte. The medical staff found that the patient was in an extremely serious condition, with a haemopneumothorax among his injuries, so they decided to transfer him immediately to the Regional Hospital of Iquique.
In the courtroom, the prosecutor presented medical reports demonstrating that the wounds could have been fatal had emergency medical intervention not been available quickly. Testimony from people who witnessed the events and a confession from the accused himself, who admitted to wielding the knife, were also submitted into evidence.
The court granted the Prosecutor's Office's request to keep the accused detained during the trial, arguing that his release could pose a risk to the community. At the same time, a period of one hundred days was set for the completion of the investigation proceedings.
