On Wednesday, the guarantee tribunal of San Bernardo held the control hearing for those arrested in connection with the violent theft of an automobile that caused the death of a minor in that locality in southern Santiago.

The Public Prosecutor's Office requested that the accused remain in custody, considering that their release would constitute a risk to the population. The judge accepted the request and ordered their pre-trial detention, as well as provisional detention for the minors involved.

At the hearing, details of the criminal operation carried out in the early hours of Tuesday were presented. The criminals allegedly initiated a series of assaults with bladed weapons, beginning with the robbery of individuals at a Shell petrol station, where they stripped a firefighter of his white vehicle.

With that same car, the gang intercepted a former Carabineros officer who was passing through the area, who suffered a broken collarbone as a result of the assault.

The most tragic episode occurred when the thieves, whilst fleeing, dragged the 12-year-old child who became caught on the car. Witnesses indicate that the occupants of the vehicle saw the boy suspended from the car, but chose not to stop and continued their flight.

The cause of death of the minor was mechanical asphyxiation caused by the seatbelt that became entangled around his neck during the dragging.

By order of the court, the identities of the accused remain under seal.
