A first-instance judge decided not to send Camilo Castaldi, known as Tea Time and formerly a member of the band Los Tetas, to prison along with his three arrested companions. Instead, he imposed total restriction on leaving home. The Public Prosecutor's Office challenged the ruling, meaning the four remain in temporary custody until senior judges in the capital decide their fate.
According to reporting from BioBioChile, the arrest took place after two in the morning in the Bellavista neighbourhood, commune of Providencia. Police officers inspected a car with tinted windows driving along Avenida Bustamante with Juana de Lestonnac. Those inside attempted to flee before being intercepted.
In the vehicle search, several incriminating items were discovered: a pistol reported as stolen in Peñalolén, an expandable baton, nearly one million Chilean pesos with no explanation of its origin, various types of drugs—cannabis, cocaine and ketamine—, a pair of knives and a small scale.
Prosecutor Luis Jaramillo, assigned to the flagrant crimes unit in the eastern zone, stated that the public defence objected to the measure and that the appellate court would need to rule on whether it ratifies the deprivation of liberty or agrees with the original judge in applying the home confinement measure.
The other arrested individuals, whose identities were protected through initials, are undergoing the same legal process. A radio station established that the three companions of the artist have criminal records; in fact, one of them had an active arrest warrant for a different crime.
Castaldi had previously had problems with the justice system: he was detained at clandestine gatherings during the health emergency, faced complaints for assaults on a former partner and a former friend, and was prosecuted for possessing a musical instrument stolen from performer Javiera Mena.
