A 17-year-old adolescent was detained as the alleged perpetrator of the homicide of a 16-year-old student that occurred in the vicinity of the Santiago de Compostela Comprehensive Secondary School in the municipality of San Bernardo. The incident took place on the afternoon of Thursday, 30 July, when the victim—a young man of Venezuelan origin—was fatally stabbed as he was leaving the establishment. According to the Public Ministry, the assault allegedly arose from a quarrel between the student and other pupils from the same school.
Following the attack, the young man was taken to the Parish Hospital of San Bernardo, where he died.
Colonel Juan Carlos Gibert of the Maipo Prefecture stated that "initially, the first information available speaks of a discussion inside, which spilled over to the outside, to the public road".
The victim's mother told CHV Noticias that she was alerted by a classmate of her son. "They told me 'your son is unwell'. And a few minutes later, they informed me that he had died," she said. The woman also reported that three classmates—older than her son—took part in the attack, and accused a teacher identified as Professor Bryan of failing to act despite knowing that the young man would be assaulted as he left the school. "What I want is for justice to be done," she demanded.
