A 35-year-old inmate died following a fight that occurred inside Santiago Sur penal facility, located in the Metropolitan Region. The victim sustained a stab wound to the neck area during the altercation and, despite being rushed to Barros Luco Hospital, doctors were unable to save his life.
The incident occurred on Street 11 of the prison compound when a dispute broke out between inmates whose motive has not yet been established by authorities. Prison Service staff reported the incident, activating emergency protocols.
The Homicide Brigade of the Police Investigation Service took over the investigation and determined that the main suspect is another 34-year-old prisoner, currently serving a sentence for robbery with intimidation. The accused will be brought before the courts in the coming hours to be formally charged with homicide.
Centro Norte prosecutor Felipe Olivari confirmed that the death resulted from "a wound inflicted by a sharp instrument, a stab or knife wound in the neck area", adding that the death occurred as a result of that injury to the cervical region.
The victim was serving a sentence for theft with a release date set for 2027. The case adds to the growing list of violent incidents recorded inside the country's correctional facilities.
