"El Rana" transferred from Valdivia after being remanded in custody
Carlos Esteban Cancino Tapia, known as "El Rana", was transferred on Tuesday from the Llancahue Penitentiary Complex in Valdivia to the Metropolitan Region, according to rioenlinea.cl. The procedure was carried out under an extensive joint operation by the Prison Service and Carabineros.
The transfer comes after the Temuco Guarantee Court ordered the remand in custody of Cancino. The Public Prosecutor's Office formalised him as an accused party in the homicide of senior non-commissioned officer Eugenio Naín and first-class corporal Marco Cosme, in addition to other offences linked to the same investigation.
The security operation was deployed in the early morning hours at the Valdivia penitentiary facility, with a substantial contingent deployed to oversee the movement of the accused to his destination in the capital.
The court set a period of 45 days for the advancement of investigative proceedings, which are continuing.
rioenlinea.cl attempted to obtain further details by contacting the Prison Service in Los Ríos, but the institution stated it did not have official information about the transfer, despite the existence of audiovisual records of the procedure.
