A capital city court has imposed severe sentences on three men after finding them guilty of a robbery on public transport that resulted in the death of one person. The incident took place in the Estación Central district during August 2023.
Maicol Salazar Negrete and Mauro Villarroel Flores must remain imprisoned for 17 years. Pablo Madrid Vásquez received a sentence of 15 years and one day. The magistrates classified them as perpetrators of robbery with fatal consequences.
As additional penalties, the three will be permanently barred from holding public office or exercising political rights. They will also be unable to practise professions requiring a university degree during their period of incarceration.
The ruling details that on the night of 14 August 2023, the defendants boarded two consecutive minibuses of route 506 circulating along Avenida Cinco de Abril. During the second journey, Villarroel Flores took a mobile phone from a passenger. When the passenger attempted to recover it, Salazar Negrete and Madrid Vásquez intercepted him to facilitate their escape.
Once outside the vehicle, Salazar Negrete attacked the robbed passenger with a knife, causing an injury to his right arm. Juan Alberto Urrutia Zúñiga, who also got off to help, suffered a stab wound to the right thigh that cost him his life. The attackers escaped with the stolen mobile phone.
In addition to the homicide, the three were sentenced for attempted surprise robbery, with 541 days in prison each and suspension from public office during that period. In contrast, Salazar Negrete was acquitted of illegally carrying a firearm and ammunition, as these charges were not proven.
When the ruling becomes final, biological samples will be taken from the condemned men to include their genetic profiles in the DNA database of sentenced prisoners. Objects seized during the investigation will also be forfeited.
