Court orders preventive detention for man who stabbed another in Pozo Almonte
Justice ordered the provisional detention of an individual accused of attempting to kill another person during a domestic dispute in Pozo Almonte. The proceeding was conducted by the Local Public Prosecutor's Office of Tamarugal.
According to the prosecutor in charge, Milton Torres, during the formalisation hearing, the incident occurred in the early morning hours of 7 July 2026, at approximately 02:50. At that time, the accused was with his father, 57 years old, and an acquaintance of the family in a residence in the locality. After consuming alcohol, a discussion broke out that ended with the acquaintance hitting the father. The accused reacted by taking a knife and wounding the aggressor repeatedly in different parts of the body: neck, shoulder, back and chest.
The injured person managed to leave the residence despite the severity of his condition. While making his way through the area, visibly wounded, he was captured by the municipal video surveillance system. Inspection officers, informed of the case, went to the scene, provided first aid and took him to the Primary Emergency Care Service of the municipality. The doctors determined that he had conditions that put his life at risk, notably a haemopneumothorax, which is why he was evacuated to the Regional Hospital of Iquique.
During the judicial proceedings, the prosecutor presented medical certificates that established that, had the victim not received timely medical attention, he could have died. He also presented testimony from people who witnessed the incident and a confession from the accused himself, who acknowledged having committed the assault.
The Public Prosecutor's Office charged the man with the crime of attempted murder and requested his imprisonment whilst the investigation continues. The judge considered that keeping him free would be a threat to the community and granted the request. The investigation period was set at one hundred days.
