Venezuelan Tren de Aragua member extradited to Chile for crimes against police officer and former military man

Orozco must answer for the homicide of Carabineros Major Emmanuel Sánchez—posthumously promoted—and for his alleged involvement in the murder of former military man Ronald Ojeda.
Following the killing of police officer Sánchez, which occurred in April 2024 when he was attempting to prevent a robbery, Orozco fled Chile using unauthorised border crossings and support networks of the criminal organisation. His escape route included transits through Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador before entering Colombia, where he allegedly sought to continue to Venezuela to take permanent refuge.
The flight ended on 23 April 2024, when Colombian police captured him in the city of Popayán. The extradition process was unblocked in February of this year, when Colombian President Gustavo Petro signed the official transfer decree to Santiago.
Violent resistance at the time of transfer
The operation was not without tension. According to reports from Colombian police, Orozco refused to sign the mandatory documents of the exit process and had to be forced onto the aircraft. During the struggle, the defendant repeatedly shouted that in Chilean territory "they were going to kill him", claiming alleged lack of guarantees for his physical safety.
Upon arrival in Santiago, the aircraft landed at Group 10 of the Chilean Air Force (FACh), where authorities deployed a security operation with armoured vehicles and heavily armed personnel. From there, Orozco was taken to the Forensics Laboratory of the Criminal Investigation Police (PDI) for routine expert analysis, examination of injuries and identity verification through fingerprints.
Prosecutors highlight speed of diplomatic procedures
The chief prosecutor of the High Complexity and Organised Crime Prosecution Unit of the Southern Prosecution Office, Héctor Barros, praised the speed at which these processes are advancing. "Extraditions have been occurring in a much more expedited manner than we even thought, and faster, therefore we believe that during this year we should have all those detained in extradition proceedings placed at the disposal of the Prosecution Office," Barros stated.
Orozco's extradition adds to a series of recent judicial victories against Tren de Aragua, facilitated by the cooperation of the Bogotá government. Just the previous Wednesday, President Petro ratified the extradition to Chile of who is known as 'Larry Changa', considered one of the historic leaders and founders of the organisation, which suggests a decisive year for the dismantling of these factions in Chilean courts.
