Venezuelan from Tren de Aragua extradited to Chile for murder of carabinero and former soldier

Google News CL — Crime reports that Chilean justice completed on Thursday the extradition from Colombia of Venezuelan citizen Dayonis Orozco, identified by authorities as an active member of the megagang Tren de Aragua. Orozco will face national courts over his alleged participation in two high-impact crimes: the murder of Major of Carabineros Emmanuel Sánchez and the homicide of former soldier Ronald Ojeda.
Following the death of Major Sánchez—posthumously promoted—Orozco left Chile using unauthorised border crossings and support networks of the criminal organisation. His escape route included transits through Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador before entering Colombia, where he allegedly sought to continue to Venezuela to find refuge. The capture took place on 23 April 2024 in the city of Popayán, at the hands of Colombian police.
The extradition process was unblocked in February of this year, when Colombian president Gustavo Petro signed the official transfer decree to Santiago. The materialisation of the operation was not without tension: according to official records from Colombian police forces, Orozco refused to sign the departure documents and had to be forcibly boarded. During the scuffles, the accused repeatedly shouted that in Chile "they were going to kill him", arguing a lack of guarantees for his physical integrity.
The aeroplane transporting the extradited person landed at Group 10 of Chile's Air Force (FACh), where a broad security operation was deployed with armoured vehicles and heavily armed personnel. From there, Orozco was transferred to the Forensic Laboratory of the Police Investigation Service (PDI) for standard examinations, recording of injuries and identity validation through fingerprints.
The chief prosecutor of the High Complexity and Organised Crime Prosecution Office of the Southern Prosecutor's Office, Héctor Barros, praised the speed with which these diplomatic procedures are advancing. "Extraditions have been proceeding in a much more expedited manner than we even thought, and faster, therefore we believe that during this year we should have all those detained in the extradition process at the disposal of the Prosecution Service," Barros stated.
Orozco's arrival is part of a winning streak in judicial victories against Tren de Aragua, obtained thanks to collaboration from the Bogotá government. Just the previous Wednesday, President Petro himself ratified the extradition to Chile of 'Larry Changa', considered one of the founding leaders of the organisation, which projects a decisive year for the dismantling of these factions in Chilean courts.
