Criminal complaint over carding in Lider.cl: $79 million in fraudulent purchases

Walmart Chile, owner of the Lider chain, filed a criminal complaint for fraud and computer falsification after detecting fraudulent transactions worth $79 million on its e-commerce platform Lider.cl, according to cnnchile.com.

The illicit purchases took place between 6 May and 11 July 2026. Unknown individuals used credit and debit card details belonging to third parties to purchase products, mainly high-end electronic items. The method is known as carding.

According to the complaint, those involved systematically entered bank data into the platform's payment system. In some orders they made up to eight consecutive attempts with different cards until they achieved approval of a transaction.

The Signifyd anti-fraud system, used by the company, allowed the detection of the operations and blocked another 693 transactions, preventing an estimated additional loss of $212 million.

"Walmart Chile, through its monitoring, prevention and security systems, detected fraudulent operations in Lider.cl and managed to block hundreds of transactions before they were completed," the company stated, adding that it is collaborating with the authorities to identify those responsible.
