Mexican citizen allegedly operating for the CJNG arrested in Medellín

A special police unit detained Mexican national Fredy Chacón—known by the alias "El Mexicano"—at a mansion in the El Poblado neighbourhood in Medellín, according to elcolombiano.com. The man was apprehended whilst apparently sleeping in the luxurious property, which featured a private cinema and multiple extravagances.

Chacón is identified as the alleged organiser in Colombia for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a Mexican criminal organisation known in that country as "the Four Letters".

Operation coordinated between multiple entities

The arrest resulted from a joint operation involving the Aburrá Valley Police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Interpol (Dijín), the Directorate of Police Intelligence (Dipol) and the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation. The authorities are investigating his possible connections with criminal structures active in Medellín and the rest of the country.

To date, it has been established that alias "El Mexicano" allegedly made payments of between $10,000 and $15,000 to members of the criminal groups La Terraza and the Clan del Golfo, allegedly to facilitate the cartel's illicit activities in the region.

Network of "protection" with armoured vehicles and former police

The authorities are also investigating a possible network of "protection" made up primarily of retired police officers, which allegedly included the use of two armoured vehicles. This network, however, failed to prevent the operation.

Information provided by the FBI, the U.S. Marshals and the DEA in Mexico indicates that Chacón has a record in the United States for aggravated assault with a weapon, offences related to firearms and extortionate kidnapping. Furthermore, in 2015 he was allegedly identified as a member of the criminal organisation called "Mexican Mafia", allegedly linked to the CJNG in United States territory.

Seized equipment and deportation process

During proceedings, four computers, two tablets, seven hard drives, six mobile phones, two USB memory sticks, documents and address books were seized, all placed at the disposal of the Office of the Attorney General for analysis within the framework of international judicial cooperation processes.

Since Chacón has no outstanding requirements from Colombian justice, he was transferred to the Migration Colombia office in western Medellín, where he was placed at disposal for his possible deportation from the country.
