Murder in Colombia
According to ilpost.it, in Colombia two further men have been convicted to 25 years in prison for the murder of Alessandro Coatti, a 38-year-old Italian molecular biologist. Coatti was found dismembered in a suitcase in Santa Marta in April 2025, just days after his arrival in the city. The two convicted men pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, theft and concealment of the body, bringing the total number of those held responsible and convicted in Colombia to seven.
The murder followed a common pattern in the country: Coatti was lured through a dating app and persuaded to go to a house in the El Pando neighbourhood. There he was kidnapped, robbed, assaulted and killed by asphyxiation. The body was subsequently dismembered and abandoned in various parts of the city, probably to complicate the discovery and identification of those responsible.
Coatti was born in Portomaggiore, in the province of Ferrara. He had graduated from the Scuola Normale in Pisa and specialised in neuroscience in the United Kingdom, where he had worked for eight years for the Royal Society of Biology. At the end of 2024 he had left the organisation to volunteer in Ecuador and travel in South America.
