Arrest in Suba: the 'padlock plan' foils theft of tyres valued at 20 million pesos

Bogotá Metropolitan Police arrested two men accused of stealing 33 motorcycle tyres from a commercial premises in the La Campiña neighbourhood, in the Suba district. According to pulzo.com, the merchandise taken was valued at 20 million pesos and the operation was made possible thanks to the strategy known as the 'padlock plan'.

Security cameras in the area recorded the subjects breaking down the walls of the establishment with steel bars and shears. The same tools were found by officers at the time of arrest, according to a report from Bogotá's Municipal Administration.

During patrol of the area, agents spotted a van-type vehicle circulating in a suspicious manner. Upon noticing the police presence, the alleged perpetrators attempted to flee, but the coordinated deployment of units that characterises the 'padlock plan' managed to close the escape routes and intercept the vehicle.

The 'padlock plan' consists of the coordinated closure of escape routes through patrols positioned strategically when an ongoing crime is detected. In this case, the manoeuvre allowed both individuals to be detained without being able to leave the scene.

Bogotá Police reported that one of those arrested has a record for attempted qualified and aggravated theft, which evidences criminal recidivism. Both detainees will face charges for theft and damage to others' property, offences contemplated in Colombian legislation.

The authorities highlighted the role of citizen reporting through the Emergency Line 123. According to Bogotá's Municipal Administration, this channel centralises reports from the community and allows for a more rapid response from security forces, within the 'Bogotá walks safely' strategy.
