Man detained in Bogotá who was impersonating police officer

A 27-year-old man was arrested in the Marandú neighbourhood, north-west of Bogotá, after being discovered wearing uniforms and insignia of the National Police without being a member of the institution, according to reporting from noticiasrcn.com.

Residents of the sector raised the alarm after noticing that the suspect was approaching people in public spaces to perform supposed "procedures" in a suspicious manner. Officers from Engativá Police Station and CAI Jaboque responded to the call and identified the individual.

When attempting to evade the officers, the man headed towards a nearby drainage channel and put on a jacket to try to throw them off. The uniformed officers caught up with him and proceeded to search him.

During the search, the authorities found police uniforms and insignia in his possession, a public transport armband and a military booklet, documents with which he intended to verify his status as an active member of the Police. The detainee himself claimed at that moment that he worked as an auxiliary.

The Metropolitan Police of Bogotá confirmed that, upon consulting the radio dispatch centre, it was established that the man did not appear as a member or active personnel of the institution. Given the multiple inconsistencies in his account, it became evident that he was a fake uniformed officer.

The arrested man was placed at the disposal of the competent authorities for the alleged crime of illegal use of uniforms and insignia.
