Murder of Sofía Osorio shocks the municipality of Frontino
Yidis Sofía Osorio, ten years old, was tortured, raped and strangled in the municipality of Frontino, Colombia, according to univision.com. Her killers staged a suicide by hanging the child's body with a rope to divert the investigation, but the ruling from the Institute of Legal Medicine confirmed that it was a femicide with sexual assault.
Sofía's mother, a teacher who had been recently transferred to Frontino, was the one who discovered the scene together with her husband. "The Public Prosecutor's Office tells us that the girl was sexually assaulted. Then, with a rope, they strangled her, suffocated her until she died and, afterwards, they hanged her from the rope where my husband found her," the woman stated.
From rumours of suicide to forensic truth
Initially, the case was recorded as a suicide and the version circulated that the minor had died carrying out a viral challenge. Sofía's mother never accepted that version. "My daughter always stood out for being a good girl, with principles, with excellent values, a totally wanted girl and very happy," she affirmed.
It was the legal medicine ruling that definitively ruled out suicide and determined that the girl had been murdered to prevent her from revealing the identity of her assailants.
Reward and search for those responsible
In front of the church altar in the town, family members and neighbours gathered to demand justice. The governor himself visits house by house throughout the municipality offering a reward of approximately 15,000 dollars to whoever provides leads that lead to the identification of those responsible.
"Initially it had been reported as a suicide; when the legal medicine ruling showed us that it had been a femicide with sexual assaults involved, we maintain the reward offer," the official indicated.
The General Public Prosecutor's Office announced that it will investigate the neighbours of the district and will compare their DNA samples with the evidence collected at the crime scene. Sofía's family demands that those responsible be identified and prosecuted.
