22-year-old arrested with cannabis in Engomi – taxi driver released
Police arrested a 22-year-old in a case involving six kilograms of cannabis yesterday, according to reports from Philenews. A 62-year-old taxi driver was also arrested initially, but was released the same evening.
The case began on 26 October 2026, when a package containing cannabis with a combined weight of two kilograms and 560 grammes arrived in Cyprus, bearing details of a specific recipient. The investigation was assigned to members of the Organised Crime Directorate (ΔΑΟΕ – Υ.ΚΑ.Ν. – Υ.Π.Ε.Ε.) in cooperation with Customs Authorities, within the framework of an investigation into illegal importation and possession of narcotics, supply, money laundering from illegal activities, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Yesterday afternoon, the 62-year-old taxi driver collected the package from a location in Engomi and was arrested at the scene. During his questioning, he stated that he went there on the instructions of a client in order to collect and transport the parcel to a specific address, unaware of its contents.
Further investigations yielded testimony that led to the identification of the 22-year-old, who was moving in a vehicle in the same area. His car was placed under surveillance and was subsequently stopped for inspection in Engomi.
During the search of the vehicle, three nylon packages of cannabis with a combined weight of approximately 100 grammes were initially found on the front passenger floor mat, resulting in the arrest of the 22-year-old at the scene. In a more extensive search of the vehicle, additional cannabis was found in various packages with a combined weight of approximately three kilograms and 836 grammes. €4,330 in cash and five mobile phones were also seized from him.
The 62-year-old was taken to Nicosia Police Headquarters, where he was questioned without any evidence emerging against him. A search of his residence that followed, with his written consent, yielded no illegal findings, and he was released the same evening.
The 22-year-old is expected to be brought before Nicosia District Court today for a detention order to be issued. The Organised Crime Directorate and Nicosia Police Headquarters are continuing investigations.
