Fraud with fake fine: 37-year-old woman loses €784 from telephone call
Cyprus Police are investigating a new case of telephone fraud after a 37-year-old woman filed a complaint at the Paphos Police Station, according to reports by ant1live.com.
The woman received a telephone call from an unknown person, who spoke in English and claimed to be a police officer. The unknown caller told her that there was an unpaid fine issued in her name. On the 37-year-old's mobile phone screen appeared the fraudulent email address "[email protected]" instead of a phone number or caller's name.
She was convinced by the suspect's claims and disclosed her bank account details in order to supposedly settle the payment. Immediately afterwards, she discovered that her account had been charged €784, realising that she had been defrauded.
The case was taken on by the Economic Crime Investigation Office of the Paphos Police Station.
Following the incident, Police emphasised that they never contact citizens in this manner and do not request the disclosure of personal or banking details for any payment. Citizens are urged not to provide such information to unknown persons who contact them by telephone. In case of doubt, it is recommended that they contact the organisations in question directly through their official communication channels.
