Attempted murder at construction site in Mouttagiaka — eight-day custody order
The Limassol District Court has issued an eight-day custody order against a 47-year-old Georgian who is alleged to have attacked a 44-year-old compatriot with a drywall cutter, according to reports by Cyprus Mail.
The attack took place at approximately 8am on Thursday at a construction site in Mouttagiaka. The suspect voluntarily surrendered at Limassol police headquarters on Friday morning. The police requested the custody order in order to continue their investigation.
In a written statement to investigators, the 47-year-old said that the victim approached him at the workplace and assaulted him due to personal differences. He subsequently claimed that the injured man hit him and knocked him down. The suspect stated that he "accidentally" grabbed a drywall cutter and swung his arms from right to left in self-defence.
He admitted that the victim's injuries were caused by the cutter, which he subsequently threw away. Police found the tool in a rubbish bin on a nearby street. The 47-year-old insisted that he "had no intention to injure or kill" and that he "acted out of fear for his life".
The injured 44-year-old was initially unable to give a statement due to the seriousness of his condition, and difficulties were subsequently encountered in finding an interpreter. Police planned to obtain his statement after the court hearing. The injured man is hospitalised under police guard at a private hospital.
