Riots in Viernheim city centre

According to hessenschau.de, unrest broke out on Sunday evening in Viernheim caused by a group of minors. The youths threw fireworks and erected a barricade on a street in the city centre.

Several witnesses informed police that a group numbering between 20 and 50 people on e-scooters was throwing pyrotechnics around. Officers arrived with reinforcements from Mannheim and with police dogs.

Upon arrival of police, some youths masked themselves and threw fireworks at officers and police cars. The group erected a barricade made of tables and benches, and also set a rubbish bin on fire. The fire service extinguished the blaze.

Police arrested twelve suspected rioters – including three children and nine youths. After the arrests, the situation quickly normalised; all suspects were released during the night. Police reported no injuries and initially no property damage.

Officers remained on site through the night. The incident came one day after violent unrest and looting in Frankfurt, in which an estimated up to 1,500 people were involved and which resulted in over 50 arrests.
