Police officer faces preventive detention over death of young man in Herrera
The Public Ministry of the Dominican Republic announced that it will request a coercive measure of preventive detention against a member of the National Police implicated in the death of an adolescent in a western area of the capital.
The chief prosecutor, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, used her profile on X to confirm that they will shortly present a request before the courts against Corporal José Francisco Moreta Heredia. The officer is identified as the perpetrator of the voluntary homicide of Darlin Enmanuel Mercado Reyes.
The fatal encounter took place in La Cañada de Guajimía, within the Herrera sector in Santo Domingo Oeste. Testimonies indicate that the young man died as a result of a shot fired by the uniformed officer, who was part of a mobile unit patrolling the sector. Security cameras in the surrounding area captured the moment of the crime.
Reynoso described what occurred as an episode that generates outrage, emphasising the institution's position on incidents of this nature.
The investigation of the case is in the hands of the prosecution, which is finalising the documents to formalise the accusation and bring the alleged perpetrator before ordinary justice.
