An officer prevented the abduction of a man in Paraíso de la Flor by shooting one of the armed captors when they pointed their weapons at him whilst he attempted to intervene.

A member of the National Police killed an armed individual and managed to prevent the abduction of a passer-by in the Paraíso de la Flor sector, a north-western area of Guayaquil, according to documentation by eldiario.ec.
The incident took place on Thursday, 18 June. The officer was carrying out surveillance duties over a detained person when residents of the neighbourhood alerted him that a crime was being committed several blocks away. Upon quickly moving to the location, he discovered several armed men who had a man held captive in the street.
The offenders were constantly threatening the victim with taking his life and intimidating him with rifles, with the purpose of robbing him of his belongings and carrying out the kidnapping. The officer identified himself as a police officer, but far from obeying, the criminals directed their weapons against the uniformed officer.
Facing an imminent mortal risk to himself and to the kidnapping victim, the officer repelled the aggression, eliminating the threat posed by one of the attackers. The remaining accomplices managed to escape and were not apprehended at that moment.
Subsequently, officers from the Judicial Police and Crime Scene Investigation unit arrived at the scene to gather evidence and begin the corresponding legal proceedings.
Both Paraíso de la Flor and the Nueva Prosperina district have been identified by security agencies as territories of high danger due to the concentration of criminal gangs. Guayaquil ranks amongst the cities most affected by organised crime in Ecuador, where crimes such as extortion and kidnappings have experienced continuous growth in recent years.
