Smuggling network dismantled in Ecuador: two police officers among those arrested

Ecuadorian police have dismantled a structure allegedly dedicated to the illegal entry and marketing of goods from Peru, according to a report by infobea.com on Wednesday. The operation resulted in the seizure of evidence valued at approximately 700,000 dollars.

The organisation operated in the coastal provinces of El Oro—which borders Peru—and Guayas. After three months of investigation, officers raided four properties and arrested seven people between the ages of 26 and 52, including two active-duty police officers.

According to police, the structure used allegedly forged documentation to facilitate the transfer and marketing of goods within Ecuadorian territory. The two officers identified allegedly permitted the transit of vehicles loaded with illegal merchandise in exchange for financial benefits.

Investigations established that these activities caused approximately 100,000 dollars in economic loss to the Ecuadorian state.

During the raids, two clandestine warehouses were discovered containing approximately 100 tonnes of cereals without health registration, which posed a potential risk to consumer health. In coordination with the National Agency for Health Regulation, Control and Surveillance (ARCSA), one of the warehouses was closed.

Among the seized evidence were an automobile, a truck, six mobile terminals, five artisanal food processing machines, and approximately 100,000 kilogrammes of cereals without health registration.
