Police operation unveils Mafia 18 arsenal in northern Guayaquil residence
After two months of investigations, personnel from the National Police's Intelligence division dismantled a clandestine bunker with a hydraulic system located in the cistern of a property in the Samanes 6 sector, in the north of Guayaquil, according to eluniverso.com. The operation was carried out on the afternoon of Wednesday, 21 October.
The property was unoccupied at the time of the raid. Agents from the intelligence unit and preventive division found inside a rifle, a shotgun, ammunition magazines, 697 unprimed cartridges calibre 5.56 mm and twelve cartridges calibre 9 mm.
The most significant discovery was high-power explosives: thirteen Claymore anti-personnel mines and ten C4 charges, the latter equipped with ignition and activation systems.
Juan Espín, acting chief of the Modelo district, described the operation as a "hard blow" against criminal structures. "The material found inside this property belongs to the Mafia 18 organisation," said the police commander.
In a second operation carried out that same Wednesday, police tracked a tricycle and a vehicle to the Florida district, where they located a storage centre containing 17 sacks of rice of presumed illicit origin. Two people were detained for investigation.
