A man approximately 50 years old died after being shot by National Police officers whilst he was assaulting his partner with a blade inside a small shop in the Batallón del Suburbio sector, located in the south-western area of Guayaquil. The incident occurred on Wednesday, 17 June 2026.
Residents of the Portete district, in the suburban area, alerted authorities after noticing that a woman was being attacked by her partner inside a premises whose doors were secured with a padlock. The uniformed officers arrived at the scene and attempted to convince the attacker through dialogue to stop the violence, without success.
As the entrance was blocked, the agents had to force their way into the establishment. Once inside, they fired a warning shot at the floor. In response to the attacker's persistence, the officers fired at one of his lower limbs, a measure that also proved unsuccessful in stopping him.
According to a statement by Colonel Carlos Córdova, commander of the Portete District, the man continued to attack the woman despite the police interventions. Faced with an imminent threat to the victim's life, the uniformed officers resorted to using lethal force, killing the attacker at the scene.
Subsequently, the officers provided assistance to the woman, who sustained serious injuries from the multiple knife wounds. She was taken urgently to a health facility, where doctors are keeping her condition classified as reserved.
Officer Córdova revealed that the victim had filed a domestic violence complaint months before the incident. It has not been confirmed whether she had a protection order or restraining order in place against her attacker.
This case occurs approximately two months after another femicide that shocked the port city, when a former police officer shot his partner to death on the National Unity bridge and then took his own life.
