Man shot dead at Montebello market in Guayaquil; third armed attack since April
A man was killed on the morning of Tuesday 24 June at Montebello market, located in the north of Guayaquil. It is the third armed attack recorded at that commercial centre since the month of April.
The crime occurred around 10:00. The victim, whose identity was not immediately revealed, was intercepted by hitmen who shot him repeatedly. The attackers managed to flee.
Personnel from the National Police attended the scene to secure it. Officers found spent cartridges in the area and collected evidence that could contribute to the investigation.
This homicide adds to two other armed attacks that previously occurred at the same market. The first, in April, resulted in one merchant dead. The second, in May, resulted in the death of another centre worker.
Security concerns at Montebello market have generated concern among merchants and customers, who have seen violence increase within its premises over recent months.
