Alias 'Pando' arrested in Guayaquil for arms, ammunition and drug trafficking
A raid conducted at a residence in Guayaquil resulted in the arrest of an individual known as alias 'Pando', accused of trafficking in weapons, ammunition and narcotics. The operation took place in the late hours of Sunday 21 June, according to police spokesman confirmation.
During the search of the property, officers seized several assault rifles, semi-automatic pistols, abundant ammunition of various calibres and an undetermined quantity of controlled substances. The weapons and narcotics were transferred to the Judicial Police warehouses for inventory and forensic analysis.
The detainee, whose full identity was not immediately disclosed, was placed in custody of the competent authorities. The office of the Attorney General is expected to file charges in the coming hours for the crimes of illegal possession and trafficking of firearms, ammunition and narcotic substances.
The operation is part of the intelligence strategy deployed in the port city to dismantle networks distributing weapons linked to the wave of violence affecting Guayaquil and other areas of the country. Authorities do not rule out that alias 'Pando' maintains connections with criminal organisations operating in the sector.
The National Police are intensifying controls in neighbourhoods identified as crime hotspots, where weapons trafficking fuels clashes between rival gangs over territorial control and drug trafficking routes.
