Ecuadorian authorities announced on Friday the detention of one of the principal leaders of the criminal organisation known as "Los Carniceros". The arrested man, identified by the alias "Gabo", held the second position on the criminal group's priority targets list.
The capture was achieved through a coordinated operation between the Security Bloc and the National Intelligence Centre, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence. The action is part of the Government's efforts to dismantle organised crime structures operating in the country.
Investigations attribute to this individual the coordination of various high-impact criminal activities, including extortion of merchants and businesspeople, selective homicides, unlawful deprivation of liberty, and trafficking in controlled substances. Additionally, he is being investigated for his alleged participation in crimes of particular violence committed in the Las Malvinas sector, north of Guayaquil, where he allegedly ordered or carried out executions, dismemberment of corpses and forced disappearances of persons.
The "Los Carniceros" organisation has been identified as one of the most dangerous gangs operating in the port city, involved in an escalation of violence that has affected public safety in several sectors of the city. The detention of "Gabo" represents a significant blow against the leadership of this group, although authorities have not detailed whether additional arrests were made in connection with the same operation or the exact location where the individual was found.
The Ministry of Defence released the news through its official channels, emphasising that the action forms part of a sustained strategy against organised crime in the national territory.
