Simultaneous attacks in southern part of the city leave multiple victims
According to extra.ec, the National Police are investigating a possible connection between two armed attacks with fatalities that occurred in southern Guayaquil on the evening of Thursday, 22 October.
The first incident took place on Avenida 25 de Julio, at around 20:00. A man and a woman who were travelling in the back seat of a red car died after being struck by bullets. The vehicle's driver was injured. The attack occurred as the car approached the bridge that connects that thoroughfare with Avenida Pío Jaramillo. Until the time of publication, it was unknown whether the perpetrators were travelling by motorcycle or by car.
In videos circulated on social media, the moments following the attack were captured, showing the victims inside and outside the vehicle. Police officers who arrived at the scene proceeded to remove the wounded whilst initial procedures were initiated.
Almost at the same time, a second attack of similar characteristics was recorded on Isla Trinitaria. Two people who were travelling on motorcycles were attacked whilst passing through that area in the south of the city. Pedestrians present at the location attempted to move away to avoid being struck by gunfire.
Colonel Juan Carlos Soria, acting head of Zone 8 — which comprises Guayaquil, Durán and Samborondón — indicated that there was possibly a link between both attacks. Investigations remained ongoing at the time of publication.
Additionally, a minor was detained by authorities due to their alleged connection to the crimes.
