Agents of Ecuador's National Police confiscated 64 kilograms of cocaine hydrochloride on 5 July 2026 at the main port of Guayaquil. The illicit cargo was camouflaged within a fruit shipment destined for Shanghai, in the far east of Asia.
The raid, dubbed operation "Shanghai", took place in the Pascuales sector, north of the main port. Officers discovered the drugs hidden in a secret chamber of a container packed with bananas intended for export.
The drug traffickers had lined the cargo with metal plates and a layer of animal fat to evade X-ray scanners and the sense of smell of detection dogs. This technique was designed to allow the substance to pass unnoticed through checkpoints.
In the course of the operation, law enforcement apprehended one person and seized the heavy vehicle transporting the container. Authorities estimate that the haul represents 64,000 individual doses, with an approximate street value of 1.6 million dollars in the North American market.
