Security personnel in Ecuador are conducting ongoing operations to dismantle criminal groups that stockpile weapons to commit crimes in Guayaquil. In one of these procedures, officers arrested a suspect being investigated for the illegal trade in rifles, ammunition and narcotics.
At the same time, the United States justice system is proceeding with cases against two Ecuadorian leaders who have been extradited. Darío Javier Peñafiel Nieto, nicknamed 'Topo', was recently transferred to US soil and faces seven charges in the Eastern District of New York. Celso Moreira Heredia, alias 'Patucho Celso', will be tried in the Southern District of that city.
In the country's northern border region, members of the Armed Forces found sites used for gold mining without authorisation and dismantled groups engaged in this illegal activity.
