An operation by the National Anti-Drugs Investigation Directorate made it possible to intercept, on 2 July, three shipments that were to depart from Guayaquil to Spain with narcotics concealed in stationery items. The packages were destined for the Spanish capital.
The intervention took place between midday and five in the afternoon at various postal agencies in the port city, as part of a strategy aimed at dismantling gangs engaged in the illegal trafficking of controlled substances.
Upon examining the contents, officers detected yellow folders with notebooks for university use. Inside, between the pages, sheets impregnated with cocaine hydrochloride had been placed.
Analysis confirmed the presence of 796 grammes of the alkaloid, a quantity representing approximately 8,000 individual doses. According to official calculations, in the Ecuadorian market this merchandise would cost just over 1,800 dollars, but on the old continent its price would skyrocket to exceed 37,000 dollars.
The use of courier companies to transport drugs abroad is a recurring tactic among criminal organisations. For this reason, the specialised unit conducts routine checks at warehouses, sorting centres and cargo terminals to prevent these shipments from crossing borders.
