Law enforcement forces in the Andean country managed to prevent a shipment of narcotics from leaving its borders destined for southern Europe. The cargo, composed of dozens of packages of white powder, had as its final destination the coastal city of Algeciras, in Spanish territory.
The operation was carried out before the merchandise reached a warehouse where it would be mixed with legitimate products. During a specialised scan, officials found 55 blocks hidden in a secret compartment beneath the container floor. The total weight came to 54.7 kilograms.
The authorities estimate that this seizure represents approximately half a million doses that will no longer circulate clandestinely. The confiscation adds to the long list of interventions carried out by Ecuadorian security forces in recent years.
Since 2021, the South American nation has maintained an annual average of 200 tonnes of drugs seized, a figure that climbed to nearly 300 tonnes in the previous year. This places it among the three states with the highest volumes of confiscation worldwide, surpassed only by Colombia and the United States.
Ecuador's geographical position, situated between two of the world's main coca cultivators, together with its maritime terminals—such as the one in Guayaquil—and its stable currency, have transformed it into a necessary hub for drug trafficking networks that primarily supply Europe and North America.
