Officers thwart kidnapping attempt in capital's northern zone
On Friday, 19 June, law enforcement officers managed to prevent an apparent abduction in the northern sector of Quito, thanks to the prompt reaction of a witness who alerted emergency services.
The chain of events began when a member of the public contacted ECU911 to report that they had witnessed an individual being forcibly put into a car painted red. Following the call, the operations centre activated a search protocol using cameras installed throughout the city.
The Zonal Coordination 2-9 team carried out visual tracking of the vehicle through the city's roads until achieving its precise location. Once intercepted, the officers proceeded to arrest those travelling inside and ensured the integrity of the man who had been abducted.
Recordings from the video surveillance system captured the moment of the operation: several occupants exited the vehicle whilst the alleged kidnap victim fell to the pavement in the midst of law enforcement action.
Subsequently, the detainees were taken before the organisations responsible for determining their criminal liability. The freed man received assistance and protection following the incident.
