Prosecutors link Los Lobos leader to million-dollar payment for presidential candidate's murder
In the preparatory phase of proceedings, Ecuador's Public Ministry filed charges against multiple individuals connected to the homicide of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, committed on 9 August 2023 in the country's capital.
Prosecutors argue that Wilmer Chavarría, nicknamed "Pipo", coordinated the attack in exchange for a sum of one million US dollars. Villavicencio, who had been recognised for his exposures of state corruption, lost his life while leaving a campaign event in Quito.
The list of defendants also includes former minister José Serrano, former legislator Ronny Aleaga, and businessmen Xavier Jordán and Daniel Salcedo, along with other alleged members of the criminal organisation Los Lobos. They are accused of having provided resources, planned, or orchestrated the armed attack against the political leader.
Details were disclosed by Guatemalan news outlet Prensa Libre.
