Official shot in Francisco Jácome cooperative

A Ministry of Education official was shot dead on the evening of Thursday, 4 June 2026 in the Francisco Jácome cooperative in north-west Guayaquil, according to expreso.ec. The attack occurred at an intersection a few metres from Eduardo Solá Franco avenue.

The victim, identified as Carlos Patricio Herrera Morán, 38, worked for the Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture in Zone 5, specifically in Milagro canton. He was travelling in a vehicle with the driver and another man when they came under attack.

Lieutenant Colonel Marcos Carranco, head of Operational Support at the Florida police district, explained that the three men were returning from a gymnasium near Francisco de Orellana avenue. One of them lives in the Francisco Jácome cooperative, which is why they were travelling through that area.

"They were intercepted by a motorcycle from which gunfire was directed at the front passenger. As a result, he died and the driver and the passenger in the back seat were wounded," Carranco said.

Among the survivors is a doctor, according to reports. At the crime scene, 17 spent nine-millimetre cartridge cases and one cartridge of the same calibre were found.

The police have not yet determined the motive for the attack and investigations are ongoing. Zone 5 Coordination of the ministry expressed its condolences on Friday through its social media accounts to the family, friends and colleagues of Herrera Morán.
