Man arrested in Jipijapa for impersonating police officer and defrauding victims on TikTok
Ecuador's National Police arrested a suspect in Jipijapa, Manabí, accused of posing as an officer to commit fraud on social media with over 16,500 followers.

Ecuador's National Police arrested a man in Jipijapa canton, Manabí province, who is being investigated for identity impersonation, according to reporting by eldiario.ec. The detainee allegedly used a uniform and police-issue clothing to pose as a law enforcement officer and deceive people in the area.
The operation was activated following a citizen complaint alerting authorities to the presence of an individual dressed in clothing similar to that worn by the National Police. Colonel Hugo Amores, commander of Manabí Subzone No. 13, confirmed that officers carried out investigative and operational preventive measures in response to that alert.
Upon arrival at the location, uniformed officers verified that the suspect was carrying camouflage-style uniform and other police items. With that confirmation, they proceeded with his arrest and transfer to the appropriate authorities. Colonel Amores further specified that the detainee has a prior judicial record for the crime of intimidation.
On the TikTok platform, the alleged perpetrator maintained a profile with approximately 16,500 followers and posts with thousands of interactions. According to preliminary accounts gathered during the investigation, some of the content had allegedly been altered using artificial intelligence tools to change his physical appearance and project a more attractive image.
According to the investigative process, after establishing contact on social media, the suspect allegedly gained the trust of victims through sustained interactions before requesting money. The authorities clarified that these accounts form part of ongoing proceedings and do not yet constitute a judicial sentence.
The National Police emphasised that the operations are aimed at preventing crimes that erode citizen security and confidence in institutions. Colonel Amores indicated that the force will continue to identify people acting outside the law in order to bring them before the appropriate authority.
The case remains under investigation as judicial proceedings advance to determine responsibilities.
