An employee who worked moving cargo was killed by gunfire during the night of Monday, 22 June 2026 inside the Montebello transfer market, north of Guayaquil, according to digital news outlet Primicias.
The incident occurred around 23:00 on platform number five, an area designated for the sale of green plantains, according to confirmation by police authorities to the press. The victim worked as a stevedore at the commercial centre.
At the moment shots were fired, uniformed officers were patrolling the area. Upon becoming aware of the gunshots, they launched a search to find those responsible for the homicide.
Using surveillance camera footage, officers managed to track two alleged suspects along the road leading to Daule. At the moment of their arrest, the individuals were carrying pistols and material related to the crime.
This death is part of an escalation of violence affecting the area. On 28 May previously, an individual was killed in the morning hours in the fruit and vegetable sector. Previously, on 5 April 2025, another man had died in a shooting that occurred inside this food warehouse, considered the largest of the port city.
The incident took place in a context of renewed emergency measures in force in Guayaquil and other Ecuadorian cities. Vendors at the location live in fear; on Tuesday, 23 June they chose not to speak to journalists, despite having previously demanded increased security reinforcements. Authorities stated that controls are maintained both at the entrances and in the corridors of the market.
