Law enforcement conducted an extensive sweep between Sunday afternoon and Monday dawn in Zone 8, resulting in the arrest of 29 individuals and affecting eight criminal organisations. The operation covered the cantons of Guayaquil, Durán and Samborondón.
Fifteen of those arrested were found inside the Multicomercio building, a structure left vacant after a devastating fire. There, those involved had established an operations centre from which they would go out to rob pedestrians, commit robberies against businesses and steal mobile devices. After each action, they would return to the building, where they also looted items from the fire debris.
A man suspected of being the perpetrator of a crime in the Cuba sector, in the south of the port city, was also detained. Investigators located him through security camera footage showing him circulating on a motorcycle.
The head of the National Police, Pablo Dávila, specified that the affected organisations are Latin Kings, Águilas, Tiguerones, Lobos, Lagartos, Mafia 18, Carniceros and Choneros. According to investigations, those detained participated in the trafficking of firearms, small-scale drug sales, kidnappings, extortion and murders.
Raids were conducted in the sectors of Pascuales, Florida, Nueva Prosperina, Modelo and Durán. Seized materials included nine pistols, six magazines, projectiles of various calibres, 852 portions of illicit substances, 15 packages of narcotics, four vehicles, 33 motorcycles, one three-wheeled motorcycle and twelve knives.
Among those arrested are two Colombians, one Peruvian and one Venezuelan.
