A man was shot dead and his partner suffered serious injuries during an operation conducted by security officers at midday on 17 June 2026. The incident occurred on streets 29 and J in the southern sector of Guayaquil, inside a business where—according to reports from nearby residents—extreme violence was allegedly being committed against the woman.
Residents of the area alerted authorities after hearing cries for help coming from inside a locked shop. When the uniformed officers arrived, they found the door was blocked and decided to break the padlock to enter.
Carlos Fuertes, head of the Portete district, stated that the officers initially attempted to subdue the aggressor using chemical substances. However, the individual—armed with a sharp object—continued striking the woman, disregarding police instructions.
Faced with the subject's refusal to cease his violent conduct, the officers fired first into the air as a warning and then aimed at the attacker's leg. Despite being struck, the man did not desist in his actions, which led an officer to fire another shot that ended his life.
The woman was removed from the establishment and urgently taken to a medical facility, where doctors are keeping her under observation. Her state of health is classified as critical.
The police authority confirmed that the case file has already been submitted to the justice system and that forensic analysis will shed light on the exact sequence of events. As an initial hypothesis, the authorities are investigating the possibility that this was an attempted murder on grounds of gender.
